New Immigration Court Fees in 2025: What You Need to Know About the Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act

Although the law states the new fees are effective immediately, in practice, the U.S. immigration court system is still updating its payment systems. As a result, some immigration courts may not yet be enforcing the higher fees, but that is expected to change very soon.

On July 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed into law a sweeping budget reconciliation bill known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” While this legislation covers various areas of the federal government, one of the most significant and immediate impacts is on immigration court fees.

What Changed?

Under the new law, filing fees for applications, appeals, and motions in immigration court have increased. These changes affect immigrants currently in removal proceedings and anyone planning to submit new paperwork to the immigration courts.
If you’re preparing to:

  • File an application for relief from removal
  • Submit an appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)
  • Present a motion to reopen or reconsider

… it’s crucial to understand that you may now face higher government fees than before.

When Do the New Immigration Fees Start?

Although the law states the new fees are effective immediately, in practice, the U.S. immigration court system is still updating its payment systems. As a result, some immigration courts may not yet be enforcing the higher fees, but that is expected to change very soon.
By August 2025, all systems are projected to be fully updated, and the new fees will be mandatory across the board.

Why This Matters

Increased fees can significantly impact immigrants and families already navigating a complex legal process. Whether you’re seeking asylum, requesting a cancellation of removal, or appealing a denial, these fee hikes could create unexpected financial burdens.

Failing to pay the correct fee amount can lead to application rejection, missed deadlines, and further delays in your case.
